Music festivals have become very popular over the past few decades and have shown no signs of declining. And it’s not just the genre. There is almost a festival for everyone these days, with certain festivals catering to EDM while others to alternative rock. There are several thousand festivals taking place every year, from the very eye candy Coachella Music Festival to the Fuji Rock festival of Japan which claims to have the ‘cleanest festival in the world’. Here are a few of the most exciting and unique music festivals in the world.
Glastonbury
Every once a year, the father of all UK music festivals comes alive at Glastonbury, Somerset. This festival is the JAM with music from everywhere: everything from techno to house to rock to reggae to pop, you name it, they play it. Vitality is everywhere to be found, especially if you chance upon the more anarchic cabaret tents and stages dotting the woods and fields far away from the enormous pyramid tents. It is a place to enjoy, have fun and chill with the people. Glastonbury Music Festival is probably best for ageing hippies, old school socialists and middle aged managers working in the public sector; just to cool off.
Field Day
Field Day is the perfect place to get drunk in the day on craft beer while gulping down some of the best vegan food you would never taste anywhere else in the super chill Village Green Area. But it’s not just the food and drink that make Field Day itself. It boasts of having a carefully curated music collection including everything from edgy guitar music, shoegaze, alternative rock to smart rap, R&B and revered DJs. Field Day also claims to have the Barn, a state of the art hangar with a really impressive lighting rig.
Boomtown
Boomtown is more than just a festival, it is a completely different alternative reality. There are thousands of actors hired each year to perform in what seems like a big play, with the whole theme of the festival being a continuing storyline. The whole place is riddled with secret passageways and actors doing weird stuff. It is an escape reality event, and sometimes even hard to understand what is real and what is not, because that is how deep an immersion you can feel at Boomtown.
Wilderness
Wilderness is one of the most unique festivals there is when it comes to a festival. Of course the music is good, it has to be, but that is hardly anything. It is conducted completely outdoors, with outdoor theatres, talks and debates; yurt building, horseback riding, a lakeside spa and even long banquet tables like in the Victorian age. It is truly one to experience, not just see.
